Each year I make my kids new hats. They don’t really need them, but they love them. I knitted a green beanie for my son. Sorry no pics. I almost made it too small.

Note to self: Stop using own head to measure the size of son’s hats.

The pattern I used for his hat was a free one from Woolly Wormhead.

For my daughters hat pictured here I used a free pattern I found on Ravelry called Capucine. It knit up quickly an easily in bulky yarn. The only problem I had with the pattern was that it didn’t call for dpns for the crown shaping and you really need them.

She love the color purple and was inspired by the Anticraft to stitch a skull on her hat and crochet it a bow. She really loves being able to personalize her stuff.

Now I just have to make a hat for my youngest and myself. I’m sure some other people will line jump me at some point and need their hats too.

In a previous post I talked about what a hard time I was having getting the holes in the lace stitch I was knitting. I did get it all figured out and have been knitting right along. I’m now nearing the end of that scarf project. I added the scarf to my forum as the first free Knit Along I will be hosting. While posting the stitch pattern in the forum, I realized my scarf didn’t look like the pattern picture in the book. I had made a mistake somewhere.

I reread the stitch pattern and I had been doing all the stitches correctly. I couldn’t figure out what I had done wrong. I could see what was missing from my scarf. I didn’t have the ridges. Where did they go? Well, I hadn’t knitted them! Instead of repeated all 12 rows for the pattern I only repeated 5 – 12. lol. I’m hosting a free knit along for this pattern on yahoo groups, Click Here to join.

So my crest of the wave scarf has no waves. It is still beautiful and cool looking. Have you ever made a happy knitting mistake?

In my quest to learn more about knitting and become a better knitter, I’m learning to knit lace patterns. I started out with a stitch called Crest of the Wave, because it looked like the simplest one I had a pattern for. I ripped it out about 6 times and had to watch several youtube videos, but I finally got it. Yes, I am proud of myself.

Why did I have to rip it out so many times? Well, my lace had no holes. Why? Because I was yarning over in the wrong way. Silly, right? My confusion came from the different ways to YO shown on youtube. I thought I knew how until I watched some videos. The stitch guide I was using doesn’t give any special YO directions. So I watched a video and ended up with the wrong YO and lace with no holes.
When that didn’t work out, I went back to youtube. I typed knit lace into the search box and found the right video. After watching it I felt like a total idiot. lol. The YO I should have been using was the normal way I usually do. The result is lace with holes. lol.
It was a bit of a process for me. I’m glad I stuck with it. I’m now working on a bright blue crest of the wave scarf. I have no idea what I will do with this scarf. The yarn was some that I bought for arm warmers. I have learned that worsted weight yarn is too thick for me to wear as warmers.
Here is a pic of my WIP

The pattern for the Crest of the Wave:
Cast on multiples of 12 + 1
Row 1-4: knit
Row 5,7,9,11: K1 *(k2tog) twice, (yo,k1) 3 times, yo, (ssk) twice, k1 repeat from * across
Row 6,8,10,12: purl

Repeat all 12 rows for pattern

For the YO move the yarn form the knit side to the purl side and then knit the stitch.

*Note*

The picture above does not show the right pattern. It is my mistake pattern!

I enjoy knitting and crocheting. My children have more hats and scarves than they know what to do with. Every year I take all the scrap and left over yearn I have saved up and make a bunch of hats. I donate these hats to local charity. Now that summer is winking at us, it can be easy to forget that there are still charities in need.

There are charities that hand out items year round, mostly to children. Contact your local charities and see if they take handmade items. If you can’t find one here are some links to get you started.
